I’m giving you two shorter stories today, because both are fairly short and I think both are worth telling.
The first is about the time I hitchhiked to Modesto.
My cousin was dating a guy who became her baby’s daddy. Isn’t it strange how normal women will now call someone their “baby’s daddy” or the even more trashy “baby daddy” in a completely serious way? It’s not even a joke anymore and I don’t know how that happened. Anyway, she was dating this guy who lived in Modesto. She decided she needed to see him. We had been creating “missions” lately to give us something to do, but they pretty much always consisted of simply walking a few blocks to see some guy one of us was dating, so this was a little more ambitious.
We walked down to the freeway and did the very standard hitchhiker thing of putting our thumbs out and waiting for someone to take pity on us. A big rig picked us up. Sucker. We were riding along in this big rig that had a mattress in the back and I suddenly became very aware that this guy could rape and/or murder us. Please let it be “or”, please let it be “or”. He informed us after a couple of miles that he couldn’t drive us all the way to Modesto, but he offered to find someone else to take us. He got on his CB radio and said he had some nice girls with him who needed a ride to Modesto. Nicole excitedly chimed in with, “And one of us is wearing a short skirt!” The trucker very seriously looked at Nicole and said, “Don’t say that.” She yelled, “Nevermind!” I was the one in the short shirt, which was the logical choice for our hitchhiking venture, no?
